A few years ago, before I went on a trip to Macau, I did some research and found that there was a famous restaurant in Macau, which was originally a Portuguese colony, that recreated Portugal’s famous sweets, “egg tarts,” using the native recipe. I headed to Macau with excitement and anticipation.

I decided to go to Macau via Hong Kong. When I looked into airfares, I found that there were far more flights from Japan to Hong Kong, and since the airfares were cheaper, Macau was much smaller, so I thought I’d try including some sightseeing in Hong Kong. Macau is famous for its casinos, so high-speed boats often leave from Hong Kong to Macau.

I immediately flew to Hong Kong and happened to come across a Hong Kong egg tart while passing by.

It seemed like a sweet shop that wasn’t particularly famous for its egg tarts, so it was just okay.

So, number 5 was an egg tart from a sweet shop in Hong Kong.

The next day, we took a jet boat to Macau. One way, about 1 hour.

I got the impression that there were quite a number of flights arriving and departing probably because there were a lot of passengers. So instead of making a reservation in advance, I went to the boat pier, bought a ticket, and rode.

Under construction on the way? Entering Macau while looking at the bridge between Hong Kong and Macau. I felt an overwhelming sense of China’s economic power while looking at the stupidly huge bridge floating in the sea. (at that time)

Macau is divided into two major areas: the old town and the new town, and each has its own famous egg tart shops.

The new town is in the Tapai area, famous for its new casino, and is a shop that sells English-style Portuguese egg tarts invented by British Andrew Stowe, which is the origin of Macau’s egg tarts. On the other hand, the old town sells egg tarts made by Mr. Stowe’s wife. store.

Since I wasn’t interested in casinos and my plan was mainly to stroll around the streets of the old town and eat local food, I decided to go to Café e Nata in the old town.

I found this shop as I was walking past the iconic hotel “Grand Lisboa”.

It was quite crowded, but perhaps because there were so many take-out customers, the turnover was fast, and I was able to take out a 6-pack of egg tarts!

When I tried it right away, it was delicious. It’s a bit different from the egg tarts I had in Hong Kong before coming here.

However, I was disappointed that the oil in the tart dough seemed to have oxidized a little, probably due to the time that had passed since making it.

So Macau’s Café e Nata’s egg tart was the 3rd best of all time.

Before traveling to the Czech Republic and Germany, I had flown through Hong Kong, and since it was Golden Week, the cheapest ticket was on Lufthansa via Hong Kong.

Lufthansa’s check-in was like a perfect outing, but they forgave me and put me on board.

At that time, I found out that there was a famous egg tart shop in Hong Kong, so I went here.

It’s a beautiful shop, and there’s a hilly area surrounding it, so I took a photo of it with the GR nicely.

Hong Kong egg tarts are characterized by the fact that the custard part is yellow and the cookie dough is moist and not crispy.

Therefore, it is the 4th largest Tai Cheong Bakery Central in history.

I went to the Central store, but it seems like there are other locations as well.

I think the second place of all time was the egg tart at Yamazaki which is one of the famous Japanese bread company in the basement of Taipei Station.
The dough was crispy and it was absolutely delicious.

It looked beautiful too.

And surprisingly, the number one place was in Japan.

“Nata de Cristiano” is a walk from Yoyogi Park!

The egg tarts (pastel de nata) here are worth a meal! You should definitely eat it.

Egg tarts are a Portuguese sweet, and “Nata de Cristiano” is a specialty sweets shop of the nearby Portuguese restaurant “Cristiano.” It’s a full-fledged store.

There may be long lines and they may sell out, so it might be a good idea to make a reservation.

The elegant sweetness of the cream and the crispy, salty pie crust create a perfect balance, and it’s so delicious that you’ll be able to eat as many as you want. If you buy cinnamon powder (sold separately) and sprinkle it on, you can enjoy a different taste!

By far, the egg tarts from Nata de Cristiano ranked first in terms of quality.

Extra Edition Egg tart with tapioca from Taipei

This is an example of how you can see that just adding tapioca to everything is not enough.

It’s like the goodness of egg tarts has disappeared.

Today, I was thinking that I would like to go to Portugal and try an egg tart someday, and I would also like to find and try a new egg tart at another restaurant.
